The Pots&Pens campaign makes visible the work that community kitchens and food activists have engaged in since 2020 in seven communities in Cape Town. Pots&Pens is a campaign coordinated by Food Agency Cape Town aka FACT and seven kitchens on the Cape Flats. These kitchens are the Alcardo Andrews Foundation, Callas Foundation, Charmaine’s Kitchen, Gogo’s Kitchen, Intervisionary NPC, Uphakanini Food Garden and Ubuntu Rural

Women combat hunger

The #righttofood is enshrined in the South African Constitution. But many people in communities across the Cape go hungry. We cannot call ourselves a responsible nation when our citizens go hungry. Food is one of the basic human requirements for survival and people going hungry have been the key motivating factor for community kitchens forming and participating in the research.
We combine community research and working with a network of kitchens where the research is taking place. These kitchens pilot different models to become more sustainable. 
The research team hosted food dialogues and conducted multiple surveys in 7 communities since 2020. This has led to more information (research reports and data sets) and awareness around hunger in the Cape Town metropole and what community kitchens and food activists are doing to combat hunger and how local government can partner with them to feed hungry communities.

Pots & Pens march to parliament

On Wednesday, October 16, 2024, World Food Day, the Pots and Pens Campaign marched through the streets of Cape Town to Parliament. The purpose was to spotlight the vital role community kitchens play in fighting hunger within the city's impoverished communities.

Alcardo Andrews Kitchen

The Alcardo Andrews Foundation (AAF) was established in 2015 by Avril Andrews to honour her son and other boys and men who lost their lives to gang violence. It operates in Hanover Park and serves up to 1,000 meals per day.
